Description
Height: 2 to 4 metres
This splendidly flamboyant form of Hibanobambusa tranquillans has striking foliage irregularly marked with numerous, creamy-white and dark-green stripes. The vibrantly-variegated leaves (frequently flushed with purple when young or in sunlight) are carried on olive green canes, which are sometimes embellished with white streaks. ‘Shiroshima’ grows as strongly as the species, and is equally resistant to drought, cold and wind. In Japan it is often planted in combination with a plain green Sasa for contrast. We think it also looks wonderful as a single specimen, or grouped with other, smaller green-leaved bamboos.
