Himalayacalamus
falconeri

Height: Up to 6 metres

This tall, clump-forming and supremely elegant bamboo is a native of broadleaf Himalayan forests. Introduced into Europe in 1847, it was one of the first to be used in a landscape setting in Ireland and Great Britain. At one time large plantings covered the area which is now the wildlife park at Fota in Co Cork. The slender green canes are densely clothed in delicate, supple, light-green foliage. When mature the plant makes an upstanding, noble clump and looks positively majestic as a lone specimen. We love to team this aristocratic Himalayan beauty with other plants to create a dreamily romantic atmosphere in the garden. It is somewhat tender in colder areas, so give it a sheltered spot in semi-shade with some moisture.
