Drepanostachyum falcatum

Height: 2 to 3 metres

In its native Nepal and India this fine-leaved bamboo is cultivated for basket making and winter animal fodder, and is used for stabilising soil on steep mountain terraces. A clump-forming plant, it has gently arching canes with attractive swollen nodes. The culm sheaths are dark-red, while the culms themselves are slim and grey-green - which we think makes a pleasing contrast. It likes a shady or semi-shaded position, and is thus ideal for a house plant.
