Phyllostachys propinqua Height: 4 to 8 metres This very hardy Chinese bamboo is rare in Europe, but is cultivated in gardens in Beijing. The young culms are pea-green with a dusting of whitish bloom under the nodes. Sometimes the powdery bloom extends all the way along the young cane giving it a matt blue-green tone. When mature, the strong, slightly arching canes are bright green and prettily branched with 2 or 3 leaves per twig. This moderately spreading bamboo makes a lovely specimen plant. A recent edition of the Royal Horticultural Society's journal, The Garden, recommends growing it in a container, which we can't wait to try.
